What is Myasthenia Gravis?

Myasthenia gravis is a condition characterized by weakness and rapid fatigue of any of the muscles under your voluntary control. It is caused by a breakdown in the normal communication between nerves and muscles. There’s no cure for myasthenia gravis, but treatment can help relieve signs and symptoms, such as weakness of arm or leg muscles, double vision, drooping eyelids, and difficulties with speech, chewing, swallowing and breathing. Though this disease can affect people of any age, it is more common in women younger than 40 and in men older than 60.

Myasthenia Gravis Resources

Jane Ellsworth founded the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America, Inc. in 1952, when her teenage daughter, Pat, was diagnosed with MG.

Finding that little information was available, Jane established the MGFA to create a foundation whose mission was to have “A World without MG”. Until a cure is found, the MGFA will continue Jane Ellsworth’s efforts to help patients and their families manage the difficulties of living with MG.

The Foundation continues to provide patients and families with the information and support needed to understand and cope with MG. The MGFA’s bequest society has been named in honor of Ellsworths.
